A fantastic performance of 'Hey Joe' by our older students.

At KidzRock! we believe that music is all about playing in bands. We carefully group our students (11-17 years) into small groups for two full days (10am-4pm) of playing, writing and performing as our bands work towards the grand finale 'friends and family' gig at the end of the final day. This professionally staged event makes rock stars out of all our students and they are buzzing with confidence afterwards.

Every band is made up of the classic rock line up (vocals/bass/drums/guitar/keys) and are carefully put together taking age, ability and tastes into consideration. The aim of our sessions is to give each student the experience of playing in a live band and to provide an opportunity for students to meet new musicial friends. Listen to 'Hey Joe' (left) to see what a group of regulars can sound like after attending a few of our sessions. Many of our older students submit their performance towards their Music GCSE.

The KidzRock! team spend a huge amount of time selecting and arranging suitable songs for each band on our sessions. We don't like be to too obvious in our choices and regularly go 'off the beaten track' introducing new bands and artists to our students. We cover both classic and modern rock songs, some which will get you rocking as a band in no time and others which may prove more challenging. Examples of songs which have worked well include Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes, Use Somebody by Kings of Leon, Hey Joe by Jimi Hendrix and Teenage Kicks by The Undertones. We encourage our students to suggest songs ahead of the session.

Everything is done as a band in separate rehearsal rooms and led by professional multi-instrumentalist instructors who act as coaches and bring out the very best in the children as they develop musically and socially during their time with us.

We have scheduled rehearsal sessions spread over the duration of the workshop with regular 15 minute quiet breaks (plus lunch) where the different bands have a chance to socialise and quiz the instructors. The bands get to perform to each other at the end of the first day which provides a great opportunity for students and instructors to feedback suggestions on areas to work on prior to the BIG grand finale gig to family and friends at 3pm on the final day. We also clear the floor for a fun open mike session on the final day which is very popular with our students.

Please note that our courses are not suitable for beginners. Our students do need to have some experience of playing their instrument and a minimum of 16 months is advised. As the engine of a band, drummers should be especially confident in their playing. For instrument specific guidelines please refer to our or call us on (01442) 863906 and we'll be happy to discuss further.
